DEFINING A HEALTHY
If you want to grow and succeed in business, chances are you’re going to hire a mentor at some point. But the thing is, not every mentor or mentor relationship is the same.
And that makes sense when you think about it – people are unique, and so are the relationships we have with them. However, it’s crucial that you ensure you’re in a healthy mentor relationship.
Not only should your mentor meet you where you are, but they should also take some responsibility for your success – and failure.
REMEMBER, THERE ARE TWO PEOPLE IN THE RELATIONSHIP, WHICH MEANS IF YOU AREN’T GETTING WHAT YOU WANT, THE ANSWER CAN’T JUST BE IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT.
Your mentor needs to be working with you to figure out what’s going on, not simply blaming you for not achieving your goals. That doesn’t create a safe space for you, nor does it help you figure out what went wrong and how you can address the situation.
Before you hire a mentor, be sure you determine what a safe space looks like for you. Need help with that? Watch the video for tips!
“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” – Steven Spielberg
